Aston Villa fans have mixed feelings after Manchester United showing

Martin O Neill

Aston Villa supoorters have been blitzing our forum over the last few days with messages of despair and unhappiness at the way the season is going. Don't worry though there are still some fans remaining cheerful! Here are a selection of all of the comments...

LaughingSpamFritter: United had half a side at best with confidence at an all time low they were there for the taking, they finished the game with a youth team forward line and still won. We will never go there again with a better chance of victory.

The game was won, despite the awful negative tactics the players overcame this and still put us on course for the three points. If we had gone in with more ambition from the start the game could have been over before MON gave it away.

I have spoken about the business plan and the direction but most of all the philosophy and management skills of MON and today he showed he is a liability and should be sacked in order to give someone with the PHILOSOPHY we deserve the chance to take the club forward.

He single handedly handed the game to United with a truly awful negative substitution a basic schoolboy error and once he did it we never looked the same side. The moment he put NRC on I said we will lose this game, it so OBVIOUS it was untrue. He is so tactically naive its unreal he reeks of negativity and has just blown any chance we had of Champions League qualification he destroyed 80 minutes of hard work by succumbing to his fear and lack of basic knowledge defend from the front you fool.

MON is a disaster for Villa and he must go and go now, the only people who can’t see it are the people who tipped us to lose this game 3 or 4 nil and they are fools, most sides in the top half would have beaten United today and so should we, Negativity he can’t help it remember when Leicester went on a run of 14 draws go and go now give a Manager who wants to win games a chance someone with just a tad of adventure.

ChrisUPNorth: Yesterday's performance pretty much sums us up right now - nearly, but not quite. We certainly deserved something out of the game, but you have to take your hat off to the young Italian lad. His goal was one of pure quality. Even after that moment of madness from James Milner, we never looked in that much trouble and deservedly went ahead. If we'd gone on to win the game, I don't think Utd would have had any complaints.

The team had a much better balance to it with players playing in their proper positions. Special mention has to go to Nicky Shorey. Just makes me wonder why its taken so long for MON to see what others have been seeing for so long. Luke Young gave his usual flawless performance and must be odds on for the supporters player of the year.

Gabby and big John looked as if they could cause problems throughout and are definitely our most dangerous forward pairing.

Now for the downside.

Without the majestic Martin Laursen, we have problems in central defence. None, I repeat none, of the other personnel we have to fill those positions is up to the job, and rectifying that situation has got to be one of MON's key aims for the transfer window.

Likewise we are lacking in midfield. Although a fan, I'm pretty sure that Petrov is past his best, offers little in the way of craft going forward, and struggles to keep pace with the game when defending. MON agreeing to extend his contract is little more than the act of a friend imo. If we accept the fact that Barry will be on his way at the end of the season, this means that we need to spend big on two, possibly three good quality, creative, midfielders.

I've really enjoyed the season to date, but think we look certs to finish below Everton in sixth on current form. If that means we miss out on a Europa League place, will we enter the Intertoto Cup again this year? I'd be interested to see what sort of crowds turn up for those games considering the credit crunch and how things fizzled out this time around.
