Aston Villa set to risk losing Gareth Barry for nothing
“Nobody has been rushing around trying to make a quick decision on things.
“The perfect situation would be we would love Gareth to stay on at the football club, even seeing his final year out if that is the case.
“The chairman’s position and mine hasn’t really changed.
“We are not running around worrying about trying to cash in.
“But if people are interested in Gareth and Champions League football is something that he wants to do, and obviously he will have a lot to consider, then there is no timescale on any of these things.
“We are going to try and improve the team. Obviously we would love Gareth to be there.”
O’Neill said there were inaccuracies in recent reports of Villa’s negotiations with Barry.
“We are well aware of the situation and a lot has been said that does not ring true,’’ he added.
“All I am saying is that in the discussions we have had have been very amicable and both parties are absolutely clear in the direction we are heading.
“We would love Gareth to stay at the football club and we are aware that he has got things to consider in the summer.”
