Nicky Shorey: Newcastle's demise shows how well Aston Villa have done

NICKY Shorey believes Newcastle’s relegation from the Premier League puts extra gloss on Villa’s second successive sixth-placed finish.
Martin O’Neill men’s repeat of last year’s league position is tinged with disappointment following their failure to qualify for the Champions League.
But, having helped send Newcastle down with Sunday’s 1-0 home victory, Shorey insists the Toon’s demise puts Villa’s achievement into context.
And the diminutive defender believes Villa should celebrate their achievement rather than dwelling on what might have been.
“It’s always nice to win, especially at home in the last game,” said Shorey. “You want to get a good end to the season, so hopefully it carries on for next season.
“It’s been ups and downs, that’s just the way it is.
“If you finish with more points it’s got to be progress. Obviously the way the season panned out we’d have liked to have done a bit better but now we’ve got to push on and do that next season.
