Aston Villa star expects at least six signings

“If people see the progression we have made as a team, and we get the right names here, they could help push us into the top four.”

Davies accepts that a deeper squad would make Villa more competitive in the Premier League, Europa League and domestic cup competitions.

But he does not buy the excuse that the limited number of players at O’Neill’s disposal last term was the reason for their untimely slide.

The 23-year-old centre-half believes Villa had sufficient strength in depth to cope with the fixture demands of the final third of the season.

“The size of the squad can be talked about but we got to February and were still flying,” added Davies.

“Obviously if you have a bigger squad you can freshen things up, but the players who were there never really complained about it and kept going.”
