Aston Villa fans react to Gareth Barry's letter

Gareth Barry

Pooch: thanks for the letter Gareth, but it`s sad that players like you will never be remembered as a Villa legend, like Paul McGrath, Andy Grey, Mortimer, Cowans, Tony Morley, Eric Houghton, Brian Little, etc.....Even Gareth's friend Steven Gerrard showed loyality and said no to a big money move ,and he to will be remembered as a true legend....as well as Steve Bull etc ......

Hope Gareth and his money are happy together..

Holtender: Dress it up how you want to Judas , bottom line is City in the Champions League is all ifs and maybe's .Liverpool still wanted it you , and i'd say you're probably feeling a little embarrassed now that story has emerged .

Your not welcome back at Villa Park so dont be surprised at your reception when you do return .I thought you had more about you than that Barry .

MarcoPolo: Why are people so bitter and twisted over this. Fans seem to expect players to show the same degree of loyalty to a club as themselves, which is ludicrous. They are mercenaries at the end of the day and who can blame them going somewhere to earn silly money if someone is prepared to pay it.

Unlike overpaid bankers footballers have a limited career and no doubt therefore feel the need to make hay while the sun shines. Barry has given 12 years to the club and people should be grateful for that. And the club has made a tidy sum for someone with just a year left on their contract.

Barty: Very touching Gareth, but at the end of the day money talks, nothing else. You spent 12 months telling us and the media you want champions league. Well you still have'nt got it. Yes you have been a great servant to the club and we have got good money for you, but it still leaves a bitter taste. You will be joining another ex Villa man who made is name at our club and joined the gravy train, Darius Vassell, and look what's happened to him.

Jeffers: A certain touch of class but just like all the others who have left Villa every supporter knows he just went for the money Ugo Ehiogu, southgate Platt, Andy Gray, Rideout and Vassell they all said they wanted the football but in the end it was just the money. Still when Andy Gray left I thought it was the end of the world, when we sighed Peter Withe I thought we were heading for Division three again we didn't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LewesVillain: 12 years Loyal service (with a slight jitter last season) and only a couple of comments that actually acknowledge this. Gareth has been at 1 club his whole career trying to bring us, the loyal fans, the success that we have felt we have deserved for god knows how many years.

He is no Craig Bellamy who is like a locust going from club to club lining his pockets. So lets look to Martin O'Neill to bring some joy to us in the transfer market, which I feel is an area he should have been active in over the last couple of years but he has not added enough players to our small squad. Why are we not in the Champions league this coming season?

This has to go down to a decision made by MON to pull a team, which gave it's all to qualify through the intertoto, out which affected momentum in the league and effectively ended our season. No wonder Gareth chose to leave. No other manager would have pulled out all his big guns to lose in a competition and got away with it. So buy big Martin, spend some of Randy's money and win us something. All the best Gareth and thanks for the memories.
