Obafemi Martins' on Aston Villa hit-list

Martins’ capture would show real intent on Villa’s part this summer.

Arsenal and Everton have also been linked with the 24-year-old, who joined the Magpies in August 2006 from Inter Milan for £10million, signing a five-year contract.

With two years remaining on that deal Newcastle will look to recoup most of that sum.

Martins had scored 28 goals in 88 Serie A appearances and after making his debut for Newcastle at Villa Park he finished the 2006/07 season as United’s top scorer with 17 goals.

He followed that up with 10 strikes in his second season and netted eight league goals in 21 starts last year as Newcastle were relegated.

Huddlestone has long been on the radar despite having signed a new and improved five-year contract in June 2008 committing his future to Tottenham until 2013.

Twenty-two first-team appearances in the league last season indicate a player struggling to make headway and with Bolton Wanderers and Fulham also thought to have expressed an interest in the 22-year-old he may decide to move on.

The Nottingham-born midfielder started his career at Derby County and had a brief spell with Wolves four years ago.

Huddlestone was called up into the England squad by Fabio Capello to face the United States and Trinidad and Tobago at the end of last season, but remained an unused substitute and disappeared from the scene thereafter.
