I want to play in World Cup says Aston Villa star
CURTIS Davies concedes he will have to start the new season in flying form for Aston Villa if he is to keep his dream of playing for England at the World Cup from withering away.
The 24-year-old Villa centre-half was named in Fabio Capello’s first provisional England squad to face Switzerland in February 2008, and was an unused substitute in Germany when England won in Berlin last November.
But Villa’s fall from grace also arguably coincided with a dip in the £10million defender’s form and even with Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher in self-imposed exile, Capello’s central defensive options remain as strong as anything in Europe. “I have to break in next year because my aim is to be part of the squad for the World Cup,” said Davies. “I’m not going to deny that fact.
“I would love to be there so if I’m going to break through next season I need to do it early to make sure I’m in the manager’s mind.
“Obviously there’s some strong competition so I need to start the season flying again.
