I want to play in World Cup says Aston Villa star

“Everyone dreams to play for their country, particularly in a World Cup. If I could be involved in the squad, first and foremost, or play in any of the games it would be a dream come true.”

Rio Ferdinand, Ledley King, Wes Brown, Joleon Lescott, Micah Richards, Matthew Upson and Jonathan Woodgate all joined Davies in Capello’s first provisional squad 16 months ago.

Only Lescott, John Terry and Upson are in the frame to face Andorra this evening with Ferdinand having pulled out through injury.

“There’s about half-a-dozen (in contention) and I would like to think I’m up there,” Davies added.

“I hope the England manager thinks I’m up there. I feel I’m just outside the top few in the squad.

“It’s up to me to prove I’m up there with them and hopefully give the England manager a tricky decision to make.”

Davies admits his personal ambition is just like Villa’s – to break into the top four.

“It’s like what they say about the league. There’s the top four, then there’s the top seven with your Evertons, Villas and Tottenhams,” he said.

“Maybe I’m scraping on the edge of that. I’m hoping I’ll get into England’s ‘top four’ defenders and then get into the squad.”
