Aston Villa's Carlos Cuellar is bristling to make his mark
Aston Villa's Carlos Cuellar is hoping to provide stubble trouble for Premier League attackers next season after growing a beard for a bet.
The Spanish defender has arrived back from his summer break sporting facial hair, which gives him a more menacing look.
But Cuellar has revealed his hair-em scare-em appearance is simply a private joke he is sharing with a friend.
And the former Rangers centre-half insists he is not trying to imitate Villa’s last bearded defender Olof Mellberg.
“It’s a promise I’m going to try to keep all year,” said Cuellar.
“Of course I’ll be trimming it before then, otherwise it will get too long, but the beard is here to stay.
“It’s a secret who I’ve made the promise to but all I’ll say is it’s a friend of mine both in football and away from the game.
“Am I liking the look? Yes, I think so. It’s great. Now I don’t have to worry about shaving all the time. Olof’s beard was longer than mine will be, though, I’ll be keeping mine short. Olof was a great defender for Villa. He was very popular with supporters.
