MARTIN O’Neill says he is striving to bring in at least one more addition to his squad before the Premier League curtain-raiser against Wigan in two days’ time.
The manager is still hopeful of bolstering his squad ahead of the new season with a number of acquisitions, but hopes to make an additional defender his priority as he looks to shore up the Villa backline ahead of the visit of Roberto Martinez’s side on Saturday.
With Danish international Martin Laursen forced to retire at the end of last season and Zat Knight’s departure to Bolton, O’Neill is acutely aware that he needs additional defensive power to ensure his side is watertight this season.
“You are always hopeful,” he said of his plan to bring in a defender before Saturday’s opener.
“We have a couple of things which we have been working on for some time. Like everything else, it is not particularly easy but we want to try to make progress.”
