Petrov vow after Aston Villa Rapid Vienna defeat

Instead, they allowed themselves to be caught on the break as they chased that deciding goal.

“We had chances to score goals, clear chances, and we missed a penalty,’’ said Petrov.

“We dominated most of the game but when we went 2-0 up, they started to take control of the game and we should not have let that happen.

“At the end of the day we didn’t lose the game but the away goal killed us.”

Petrov admitted the team would reflect the missed opportunities but insisted no one blamed Ashley Young for his first-half penalty miss which could have secured victory.

“In these games it is vital to score enough goals to go through and we didn’t do that overall in the two legs and now we are out,’’ he added.

“Ashley scored a great penalty at Anfield and missed tonight but no-one will blame him. He will score plenty of goals for us in the League this season.

“We will try and get in Europe again but we have to concentrate on the Premier League now.

“We will get better and better.”
