“He is feeling brighter. He said it was a wee bit less painful than the last time it occurred and usually it is one of those he will push to the side and get on with it.

“At some stage you would have to suggest surgery might be the answer. Of course, most specialists would say if you can avoid that as long as possible then that might be an answer.

“I am no medic. I am just going on advice filtered through to me by the specialist,” O’Neill added.

Dunne was at Villa’s Bodymoor Heath training ground yesterday to discuss his reported £6 million move from Manchester City but the deal is being held up by personal issues between the defender and the Eastlands club.

O’Neill continues to adopt a cautious approach, adding: “I am hopeful but until pen is put to paper we will have to wait.”
