Aston Villa: James Milner apologises for his off day against Birmingham City

“Football’s about confidence but you’ve just got to keep trying.

“Things don’t always go your way, like against Birmingham, and a few passes can go astray but you can’t hide because that won’t do you any good.

“You’ve just got to keep going on and trust your ability and that’s what I try to do.”

Milner was on loan at Villa when a Kevin Phillips winner gave David O’Leary’s team victory at St Andrew’s in October 2005 and he is savouring another success in the Battle of Brum.

“I’ve been there before and won,” he said. “I’m delighted. It’s a massive game for everyone, for us and for the fans as well.

“When you go there it’s always going to be tough, but I thought we played well. We looked pretty solid at the back and created chances so I thought we deserved the win.

“The manager said at half-time that if it wasn’t quite going right to make sure we didn’t lose the game, but obviously to try and win it.

“We did that. We kept a clean sheet and we always fancy ourselves to get a goal.

“It’s been a great week with two big games and two right results. The way we did things for England was great and it was great to go to Birmingham and win the game.”
