Curtis Davies: Gareth Barry is still my mate despite quitting Aston Villa

Curtis Davies

GARETH Barry’s former team-mates have promised the Manchester City midfielder a warm welcome from the Villa Park dressing room – if not the terraces – on Monday.

Curtis Davies insists Barry remains a close friend of many Villa players despite quitting the club for Mark Hughes’ extravagant Eastlands revolution in the summer.

“I’d like to think that the fans would clap him – but I’ve got a feeling it will be jeers,” said Davies.

“Gareth’s my mate and I haven’t got a bad word to say about him.

“He did this club a good service over the ten years he was here but football is very fickle and I think people see the short-term picture.

“Okay, he’s gone from saying he wanted to play Champions League football to moving to Man City.

“But in Gareth’s eyes if he’d gone to Liverpool last year then he would have been playing Champions League football and that’s what he intended to do.
