Tom Ross Column: Aston Villa signings could bring a trophy

Richard Dunne

GOAL scorers win games but defences win championships and trophies, that was the mantra of George Graham who took Arsenal to the title.

The signing of Richard Dunne, James Collins and Stephen Warnock could be the platform for Villa to bring a trophy to Villa Park sooner rather than later.

Martin O’Neill has definitely pulled off a master stroke with the signings to bolster his defence.

Richard Dunne is the closest thing you will get to Martin Laursen, a man who enjoys defending, a man who is ecstatic about a clean sheet. He smells danger and is always aware, unlike Rio Ferdinand, while similar to the popular Laursen; he is also a big threat at the other end.

His huge presence in the opposition penalty area coupled with his desire to get on the end of free kicks and crosses could see him end up in double figures in the goals list.

No one should underestimate the importance of these signings. I and many others believe they could push Villa a step closer to challenging the top clubs.

However, they still need to add more quality, while in my opinion they have not yet replaced Gareth Barry.

Without doubt Villa has more than enough to be the best of the rest outside of the big five clubs.
