MARTIN O’Neill has been given a welcome boost ahead of the weekend’s trip to Turf Moor with the news that both James Collins and Emile Heskey could be in contention after their recent injury woes.
But the Villa boss admits there has been another setback in defender Freddie Bouma’s return.
Bouma shattered his ankle more than a year ago and has now injured a toe which has hampered his return.
O’Neill, however, is adamant his Dutch left-back will be back playing again soon.
“Freddie has a toe injury which has certainly hindered his progress. In terms of his old injury, I think he is pleased that’s coming on very well,” he said.
“It’s this toe that’s kept him out the last few weeks. It’s prevented him from doing anything. He’s stubbed it but it’s a wee bit sorer than that.
“He is unable to train at the minute but it is far from a long-term injury. It is just a setback but, like everything else, when you are thinking you are well on the road to recovery every setback seems to be more pronounced.” However, the prognosis for Collins (groin) and Heskey (back) is much better.
“They are progressing pretty well at the moment,” the Villa boss said.
“There is no guarantee but we are hopeful that at least one if not both could be available for Saturday.”
