Aston Villa: Nicky Shorey attempts to kick-start his career

Nicky Shorey

NICKY Shorey will attempt to kick-start his career during a loan spell with Nottingham Forest in the Championship after falling out of favour at Villa.

Shorey’s first-team chances have been limited since Martin O’Neill signed Stephen Warnock in August with the former Blackburn defender excelling at left-back. But the diminutive former England defender will be hoping to get himself back on track with a month-long spell with Billy Davies’ men at the City Ground.

Shorey, who O’Neill signed from Reading for a reported £3.5 million fee 15 months ago, has endured a frustrating time at Villa Park.

Originally brought in as cover for injured left-back Wilfred Bouma, Shorey was dropped after an error against Middlesbrough last November.

He subsequently spent five months on the fringe of Villa’s Premier League squad with right-back Luke Young filling in on the opposite flank.

Shorey returned to the starting line-up towards the end of last term and began this season with a run of games as Villa’s first choice left-back but he rejected the chance to join Portsmouth on loan on transfer deadline day and has since played second fiddle to Warnock.

The 28-year-old is expected to make his Forest debut in their home match against Doncaster on Saturday.

Villa will have the right to recall him at 24 hours’ notice after the first 28 days of his loan.
