Carew insists lessons have been learned from last season when Villa lost their grip on fourth place following their second-half capitulation to Stoke, allowing a 2-0 lead to slip to 2-2.
Arsenal, who had been trailing in Villa’s wake, went on to surpass them and Villa never recovered.
“I think we have every chance this year,” the Norwegian international said.
“We proved that last year although we didn’t mange to last for the season.
“In January and February we were fourth and six points in front of Arsenal at one stage.
“Then after the Stoke game, in the course of three games, Arsenal were suddenly three points in front of us.
“Things happen suddenly in this league and change very quickly.
“We just have to manage the confidence for the whole season this time and keep our performances up.
“Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham all want to be up there and we have to believe we are good enough to compete with them.
‘‘I don’t think there is any reason why we can’t be. We will certainly be having a go at it.”
