Stud Marks: The Aston Villa fans' chant which caused confusion at Arsenal

THE look of confusion on the Villa substitutes’ faces was priceless.

There they were, James Collins and Steve Sidwell, running along the touchline to keep warm from the bench at The Emirates when the healthy band of visiting Villa fans broke into a chorus of “Sali – Salifou” (to the tune of Daddy Cool), a terrace chant designed to pay homage to Villa midfielder Moustapha Salifou.

The reason for the confusion among the pair was because they knew the Togo international had not travelled with the team to play Arsenal, having not featured in Martin O’Neill’s line-up at all this season.

In fact, the player was in the corporate hospitality area above the Villa supporters as a guest and had been spotted by the crowd.

It could be the closest Salifou gets to being involved in the action in claret and blue this season, let alone to receiving hero worship, with rumours that he may be off to pastures new in the January transfer window, frustrated at the lack of opportunities coming his way.
