Birmingham City up offer for Aston Villa's Craig Gardner
Birmingham City are closing in on the signature of Aston Villa's Craig Gardner.
Blues have improved their bid for the midfielder to £3.5 million and are confident of completing a deal early next week.
Wolves and Stoke City have also expressed interest, but Blues are firm favourites to land the 23-year-old.
Gardner is keen to move across the city to St Andrew's and Villa are willing sellers as Martin O'Neill needs to generate finance in order to make his own transfer window moves.
Blues, meanwhile, are heading to Malta for four days next week for a warm-weather training camp.
Because of the recent snowy weather, they have hardly been able to use their normal Wast Hills HQ.
So they have arranged the trip to the Mediterranean island in conjunction with commercial partner Air Malta, supported by the Malta Tourism Authority.
Malta has become a popular destination for mid-season breaks with major European football clubs and only last week Italian side Parma trained there.
