Stephen Warnock gets England backing from Aston Villa manager and captain

Stephen Warnock

STEPHEN Warnock would not let England down, according to the Villa defender’s claret and blue colleagues.

Warnock is a strong contender for the Three Lions’ left-back squad following Ashley Cole’s injury and Wayne Bridge’s withdrawal.

But the former Blackburn defender did himself no favours with an uncharacteristically poor performance in Sunday’s Carling Cup defeat to Manchester United.

Warnock was given the runaround by United’s flying winger Antonio Valencia in front of watching England coach Fabio Capello.

However, the defender is set to get another Wembley chance in tomorrow night’s friendly against Egypt after being selected with Everton’s Leighton Baines.

And Warnock’s club captain Stiliyan Petrov insists the claret and blue battler won’t let his country down at the World Cup in South Africa.
