Aston Villa 1, Birmingham City 0: Martin O'Neill prepared to change mind over penalty

Villa boss Martin O'Neill had a different perspective on the controversial penalty which settled the Second City derby - and angers the Blue half of the city.

He said: "From the bit I've seen, Johnson has caught Gabby's legs. If he has got the ball first, it becomes a separate issue.

"But from the slow motion, it looks as if he wrapped his legs around Agbonlahor and it was a penalty.

"Referees are now saying it doesn't matter if you touch the ball first. If you are following through with intent, it is a foul.

"If Johnson has got a clean touch on the ball then I will change what I think."

Villa made sure of at least a Europa League spot by defeating their local rivals but O'Neill has his sights higher.

He said: "It has been a great week for us and the consequence of winning today is that we have qualified for Europe.

"We will go into the last two games and give it everything. Manchester City away next week will be exceptionally hard but we will have to try and win."

O'Neill conceded that Birmingham may have deserved something from the game and only a string of fine saves by Brad Friedel kept them in contention before Milner's penalty.

"Birmingham might feel aggrieved because they played very well in the second half," he added.

"Friedel was magnificent. On the second-half performance, they deserved something from the game."
