Aston Villa: James Milner admits England came up short
JAMES Milner admitted England came up short in the World Cup and failed to make the impact they should have done.
Milner was left to reflect on what might have been after the 4-1 humbling by Germany.
“We came here with high expectations and are disappointed to go out,” said the Villa midfielder.
“We have not performed like we can. But you have to look forward and we move on. We put them under pressure at the start of the second half and were on the front foot. We hit the bar as well and had that gone in, who knows what might have happened.
“We go forward as a team and defend as a team and make sure we are covered at the back.
“Their wide players do not track back and that obviously helps them break pretty quickly. Equally it creates space for you to go forward.”
Milner, who was replaced by Joe Cole 11 minutes after Frank Lampard saw a free-kick hit the bar in the 53rd minute, added: “Germany are a good team with quality players and have as good a chance as any in the tournament.”
