Aston Villa: Stiliyan Petrov admits players "didn't help" Kevin MacDonald’s permanent manager job prospects

STILIYAN Petrov admits that Villa’s players “didn’t help” Kevin MacDonald’s permanent manager job prospects with their Newcastle no-show.

MacDonald’s hopes of remaining in the claret and blue hotseat on a long-term basis were hit with Sunday’s 6-0 thrashing at St James’ Park.

And Villa’s captain admits he and his team-mates feel “guilty” for letting down the caretaker manager on their depressing afternoon on Tyneside.

Petrov insists MacDonald remained calm after the match and still has the backing of the players to be Martin O’Neill’s permanent successor.

“It’s really sad when you see the caretaker manager trying to get the job and we didn’t help him,” said Petrov.

“Are we feeling guilty? Yes. Like everyone has been saying, we would love Kev to get the job.

“He’s been great to us, even after the game he was really calm and just made the points about what we did wrong.

“We’re the ones who play so it’s our responsibility. He tells us what we need to do and if we don’t do it it’s our own fault.

“We take all the responsibility because we weren’t performing well enough to win.”
