Harry Forrester scored two against Burton with James Collins Junior and Nathan Delfouneso also on target.
Meanwhile, MacDonald has revealed he will adopt an old-fashioned approach to managing Villa’s Premier League stars.
The temporary boss will use the methods passed down to him from the famous Anfield bootroom during his mid-1980s heyday playing for Liverpool.
His traditional style has achieved regular success for the reserves with three consecutive titles.
“The only difference between managing the first team and managing the reserves is that you’re dealing with multi-million players,” said MacDonald.
“Are they treated differently? They are and they aren’t. I think they expect you in training to do certain things.
“I think players are very respectful of you if you are hard but fair. I’m not saying I’m either, but I’m just saying you’ve got to be aware of more than football and be aware of their needs and requirements.
“I tend to not go away from what you would say were the old-fashioned values that were taught to me as a football player.
“If it was good enough for the players I used to play with at Liverpool then it’s good enough for the players I’m trying to coach.
‘‘I just like to have respect for how people are doing their jobs.
‘‘I respect them for how they’re trying to play their football.
“It doesn’t always work out right, but as long as you have mutual respect I think that’s pretty fair.”
