Aston Villa: Mat Kendrick looks at the Kevin MacDonald situation

Kevin MacDonald

THERE’S a Frenchman, a Scotsman and a Scouser in a club...

Hopefully, this is not the start of some lame gag, but the possible make-up of Aston Villa’s management team by the end of this week.

And, while all the talk surrounds the expected arrivals of two Anfield aristocrats, the future of the other lesser-known former Liverpool star could be just as crucial to Villa’s welfare.

The indications are that Gerard Houllier will bring his old Reds’ right-hand man Phil Thompson to Villa Park as his assistant, which leaves a question mark hanging over Kevin MacDonald’s role.

Part of the delay in announcing the claret and blues’ new-look management structure is establishing if and how the caretaker boss fits in.

To lose MacDonald when the club are still reeling from the shock departure of Martin O’Neill and all of his backroom staff would be a blow for Villa’s hopes of a tidy transition. The popular Scot knows Villa inside out from 15 years at Bodymoor Heath and the Villa Park dressing room’s ‘Back the Mac’ campaign was not just a case of ‘better the devil you know’.
