Gerard Houllier: I share hurt of Villa fans

Gerard Houllier

GERARD Houllier has sought to set the record straight after his comments in the wake of Villa’s disappointing defeat to Liverpool were misconstrued.

Some supporters took exception to Houllier claiming that he would “prefer to lose” to his former club than another opponent because “I like them”.

But Houllier has clarified his sentiments and reaffirmed his commitment to Villa during a difficult period for the claret and blues who have lost four successive games.

He insists his words were intended to be humorous and has stressed to Villa fans that he shares their hurt following the 3-0 setback at Anfield.

Houllier reassured the Villa Park faithful that his team are striving to get back to winning ways in Saturday’s home derby against local rivals West Brom.

“To the fans who travelled to Liverpool and to all Villa supporters, let me assure that we are working as hard as we possibly can to achieve the level of success which this great club aspires to,” he said. “Everybody is hurting because of recent results and I and my staff are working on putting this right.
