Aston Villa: Gerard Houllier and Randy Lerner agree transfer policy after Wednesday's meeting

GERARD Houllier and Randy Lerner are singing from the same Christmas carol sheet ahead of the January window after Wednesday’s routine transfer meeting.

Houllier met with the chairman and chief executive Paul Faulkner at Bodymoor Heath to talk through potential dressing-room arrivals and departures next month.

The manager and the board agree some new signings and outward deals are necessary – if the right opportunities present themselves.

But Houllier, Lerner and Faulkner will not entertain budget-busting transfers during a notoriously difficult time for player recruitment.

And they are happy to continue the policy of promoting young players and supplementing them with new faces next month or next summer.

“I meet them practically every week,” said Houllier.
