JAMES Collins believes Villa veteran Brad Friedel is sharp enough to play on at the highest level – joking that he will retire before the ever-green goalkeeper does.
While Collins was the match-winner against Newcastle on Sunday, Friedel was the match saver with two crucial late stops.
Villa are in talks with Friedel about potentially keeping the American another year despite him turning 40 next month.
Collins, who also played a part in Sunday’s long overdue clean sheet, is convinced that Friedel is physically and mentally enough to carry on in the Premier League.
“We knew how vital the points were and Brad has made a great save on 90 minutes to keep us in it and give us the win,” said Collins.
“Since I came to the club, he has been unbelievable week in and week out.
“He is such a good professional in the way he handles himself off the pitch and he is in the gym every day still at 40.
“He is a credit to himself and his profession and his professionalism is second to none. I think I will retire before him the way he is going and I’m only 27.
“The way he looks after himself off the pitch and the way he goes about his business is great and he is a world-class keeper.
