Villa's West Ham old boy Nigel Reo-Coker told to keep his cool after taking Jean Makoun's place

NIGEL Reo-Coker has been ordered to stay ice cool on his heated return to West Ham today after being recalled at the expense of Jean Makoun.

The former Hammers captain will partner Stiliyan Petrov in central midfield with Makoun dropping to the bench at Upton Park.

Reo-Coker is braced for a hostile reception from West Ham fans after leaving the club to join Villa almost four years ago.

But despite the midfielder’s altercation with Newcastle’s Joey Barton as he left the pitch last week, Houllier reckons Reo-Coker can handle the occasion.

“Yes, he will be playing,” confirmed Houllier. ‘‘Nigel and Stiliyan are playing.

“I think Nigel will make a demonstration of composure. He has improved this side of his game – his overall game has improved.

“He is a man now not a kid. He will be alright. I think he will be able to prove he can cope with that.

“Nigel has got character. Whether he plays or not he’s good in the dressing room, he’s a team member of the squad.

“I have no qualms about putting him in the team at West Ham. He will show he’s improved. I didn’t see that (spat with Barton). He was unhappy about a foul. I will ask him.”

Houllier has been impressed with Reo-Coker’s temperament since he lost his temper in the Second City derby draw with Blues at Villa Park in October.
