Aston Villa: Stiliyan Petrov recalls making his international debut in Hong Kong

STILIYAN Petrov has come a long way since his last playing trip to Hong Kong after revealing he was a boy full of Eastern promise when he made his international debut here.

Petrov’s Bulgarian bow came as a 20-year-old hopeful 12 years ago and Villa’s captain says the club’s Barclays Asia Trophy tour has stirred fond memories from back then.

The 32-year-old skipper hopes returning to Hong Kong will be another bright dawn, not only for his own career but for the claret and blues under Alex McLeish.

Villa will step up their pre-season preparations today when they face Blackburn in the first of their two ties at the Hong Kong Stadium.

“Twelve years ago I was a really young boy,” said Petrov.

“I don’t think I’m that young anymore. It was great, I had my first game for the national team when I was here so I’m glad to be here again, and part of this tournament, 12 years later.

“It’s exciting being back here and I’m really looking forward to it.

“Obviously there are three Premier League teams here and we will all try to see what level of fitness we are at the moment.

“As long as we stay away from injuries, I think that is the most important thing because the season is starting in a couple of weeks.
