DARREN Bent expects Villa strike partner Gabby Agbonlahor to take his England agony out on Tottenham a week tonight if he wins his fitness race.
Bent played a part in the Three Lions’ impressive 1-0 victory over World and European champions Spain in Saturday’s friendly at Wembley.
But Agbonlahor pulled out of the weekend practice match and tomorrow’s warm-up game against Sweden after suffering a hamstring injury in training.
Bent has expressed sympathy for his team-mate, whose prospects of making the squad for Euro 2012 next summer are now receding.
However, the former Spurs striker is optimistic the hamstring blow will not knock in-form Agbonlahor out of his stride for the claret and blues.
Villa’s record signing is also keeping his fingers crossed Agbonlahor can still stake an England claim to play in the tournament in Poland and Ukraine.
“It is massively disappointing he had to pull out,” said Bent, who claimed an assist for Frank Lampard’s winner against Spain.
“You see him week in and week out. He has been tremendous this season.
“Hopefully he will be back soon, will get another chance, and be fit for Spurs when we play them on Monday week.
“He has been brilliant all season. He has got the pace and the power and he seems a lot more confident this season than he did last season and fair credit to him.
“He’s gone away, he’s worked hard, and it’s paying dividends this season, he is scoring goals, he is playing well.”
