FABIAN Delph’s loan return to Leeds has edged a step nearer after Alex McLeish confirmed Villa have now been contacted by the midfielder’s former club.
McLeish intends to speak to Elland Road counterpart and former Villa player Simon Grayson about a temporary switch for the out-of-favour youngster.
Grayson has also confirmed his interest in borrowing Delph, who burst on to the scene at the Yorkshire club before his £6million move to Villa in August 2009.
But the Leeds boss admits there are discussions to be had about what proportion of Delph’s Premier League wages the Championship club can afford to pay.
And Villa are likely to insist on inserting a recall clause in case injuries or suspensions mean Delph is needed in a claret and blue shirt.
Leeds are also interested in taking Eric Lichaj on loan again after a successful stint last season, but Villa are yet to decide about the young right-back.
“Simon Grayson did try to call me (about Delph), but I’ve not spoken to him yet,” confirmed McLeish.
“I think he’s spoken to Kevin MacDonald, so I’ll get back in touch with him.
“I don’t know about the timeframe, we’ll see.
“I’m going to speak to Paul Faulkner to see where the club lies with it also.”
McLeish admits Delph needs first-team football after falling down the midfield pecking order since his concerted early-season run in the starting line-up.
Chris Herd before his injury and Ciaran Clark have moved ahead of him, while Gary Gardner has also forced his way into the senior squad in recent weeks.
