GABBY Agbonlahor is ready to reprise his role as Aston Villa’s derby-day talisman at Molineux – even if it is as creator supreme rather than scoring star.
Agbonlahor has an impressive record in local skirmishes and would love to add to his seven-goal tally this season with a goal at Wolves tomorrow.
But the Brummie attacker insists he would derive just as much pleasure from setting up a Villa team-mate if he is employed in a left-wing role.
Manager Alex McLeish could consider using Agbonlahor out wide to accommodate a strike partnership of Darren Bent and Robbie Keane in the M6 derby.
“I played a few games without a goal and it does start to worry you a bit, but I got one at Bristol Rovers in the cup, so that helped,” he said.
“I think, as well, I’ve been playing on the wing a bit more so that’s where you’ve got to create more goals rather than just scoring.
“If I’m in the side and playing and hopefully creating chances as well then it’s not all about the scoring.
“I think my best tally for a season was 15 or something in the good old days! I think big John Carew used to beat me by one or two.
“I don’t really set goal targets, as long as I get those chances and am not missing too many of them.
“If I’m still scoring a few and creating a few then I’m happy.”
Agbonlahor has always stated his preference for playing as a central striker but has taken to the wide role much better than previously this season.
