DARREN Bent is determined to join the Premier League’s 100 goals club against QPR tomorrow to help Aston Villa bounce back from their FA Cup collapse at Arsenal.
Bent has scored 99 top-flight goals and would love to bring up the ton with a strike and a win in tomorrow night’s return to league action at Villa Park.
The record signing’s continued presence in claret and blue after the transfer window shuts tonight should boost the club by ending rumours about his future.
And Bent hopes scoring a goal to become a centurion and helping Villa restore some Premier League pride would help start the FA Cup exit healing process.
Alex McLeish’s men are now targeting a top-half finish.
“I’d hate to get my 100th Premier League goal in a game where we get beaten,” said Bent.
“The main thing is we get a win tomorrow and if I could get a goal as well I’d be delighted. But the main thing is we get the three points.
“There are still a lot of games and a lot more to play for. Hopefully we can cement ourselves in the top ten and take it from there.
“It would be amazing to shoot up that table – just like Villa in the Premier League in the second half of the season.
“Of course, if I’m scoring goals it means we are giving ourselves chances of winning games and moving up the table, so it all goes hand in hand.”
Villa already have Emile Heskey (110), Dion Dublin (110) and Dwight Yorke (123) in the Premier League 100 club with goals in claret and blue and for other clubs.
And Bent, who has a stunning league and cup strike-rate of 17 goals in 36 starts and one substitute appearance for Villa, would love to outscore them all.
