Birmingham City beat Wolves to sign Scott Dann from Coventry City

Wolves have been watching from the wings and nipped in to try to steal away Dann, who knows Molineux men Michael Kightly and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake from Under-21 squads.

Dann sprung to prominence as a young defender at the Banks’s Stadium after coming through the youth ranks.

He was an integral part in the Saddlers’ League Two championship winning side, alongside talented young defenders Dan Fox, who joined him at Coventry, and Anthony Gerrard, who was also briefly linked with Blues last season.

The Saddlers are known to have included several clauses in the deal that took Dann to Coventry and may be in line for a percentage of any sell-on fee.

Blues now face another fight to complete the signing of American international defender Oguchi Onyewu after Fulham emerged as suitors for the 27-year-old defender.

Onyewu seemed on his way to St Andrew’s and a deal looked in place.

However, Onyewu’s agent announced that a deal had not been finalised and nothing could be signed until the former Newcastle United defender returned from international duty in the Confederations Cup in South Africa.

That has given Fulham the opportunity to hijack the deal.

Onyewu is available on a Bosman transfer from Standard Liege after he opted to quit the Belgian club instead of renewing his contract.

Blues have already failed to with two attempts to persuade Cardiff City to part company with defender Roger Johnson, and were believed to be considering a move for Villa’s Zat Knight, but that may be ditched now.
