Birmingham City 0 Liverpool 3: Colin Tattum's Big Match Verdict

Timmins, who got tighter and tougher with Amoo in the second-half after a torrid opening 45 minutes, forced a good tip-over save from Bouzanis after elegantly striding forward and trying his luck with a curling right-footer from distance.

But on the stroke of half-time Lyness kept the score down by flying across to the back post to spectacularly keep out Dalla Valle’s header.

Blues were much more purposeful after the break and were denied by a goal line clearance from Steven Irwin when Preston met a driven cross shot by Jamie Sheldon and cushioned a volley towards the top corner.

Jake Jervis came more into the game, Blues kept the ball moving through Ashley Sammons and got stuck into Liverpool better, but it often took some last-ditch heroics at the back to thwart Liverpool raids.

Lyness made good stops from Adam Pepper and Christopher Buchtmann, and reacted well to repel a fierce Pepper follow-up with his feet after the initial shot rebounded back off the post.

Blues: Lyness, Hronec, Timmins, McPike, Jacob Rowe, Preston, Hubbins, Sammons, Gradwell (Bogle 80), Jervis, Sheldon (Williams 80). Not used: Luke Rowe, Butland, Packwood.

Att: 4,238.
