Black: Coventry game is no grudge match for me

ERIC Black says he holds no ill-will towards Coventry City as he prepares to return tonight for the first time since his controversial sacking as manager.

The Blues No2 was a huge hit after replacing Gary McAllister in January 2004.

After taking the Sky Blues to the fringes of the First Division play-offs, he was surprisingly ousted as boss a game before the season ended to make way for Peter Reid.

It sparked a fans' revolt: a 'Black Day' was organised at the final match, where all supporters wore black items of clothing to signify their disapproval at the decision.

It wasn't a nice experience at the time what happened but that's football, you move on," said Black.

"I've been back to see games obviously but I haven't been back in an official capacity.

"The supporters were fantastic. I couldn't have asked for anything more of them when I was managing the team and when I left.

"People make decisions and that's what happens. I'm happy here now and hopefully we can get a result tonight."

Black gave current Blues favourite Gary McSheffrey another chance at the Sky Blues after it looked as if his career had nosedived under McAllister.

"Gary's a hero going back," said Black. "It won't affect him, if anything it will bring the best out of him."

Manager Steve Bruce said that McSheffrey, who is a contender with Stephen Clemence to replace Damien Johnson as captain, has praised the winger for settling so well.

Black said: "Having known him like I did, he's got a strong mentality. He's a strong character. I didn't think the move would faze him."
