No decision on Birmingham City skipper

Alex McLeish

ALEX McLeish has refused to be drawn on who will be Blues’ captain next season.

Lee Carsley has been touted as a potential new skipper, but McLeish said he had not made his mind up yet, at least not to reveal publicly.

Damien Johnson has been captain since the summer of 2006, when Kenny Cunningham was released, and when he has been unavailable Stephen Clemence, Martin Taylor and Liam Ridgewell have deputised.

The manager said: “Lee Carsley’s a leader, but I don’t want to talk about the captaincy just now.

“I’ve said to Lee I’d like him to come and help us back into the Premiership, and use his experience to the full. But I’ve not made a decision on the captaincy.

“Damien Johnson is club captain and that’s the situation at the moment.

“I’m not saying it will change, all I am saying is that Carsley is a leader and in my discussions to sign him I didn’t actually say ‘you’re going to be captain’; I did say ‘come and lead this team to the Premiership’. This is something we can look at later.”
