ALEX McLeish has stressed he is committed to Blues for the long haul.

Tomorrow, McLeish celebrates his first anniversary in charge as manager and admitted that he was not planning on going anywhere else.

McLeish took what was a surprising step in many peoples’ eyes 12 months ago by quitting Scotland to join Blues, who were embroiled in a fight for Premier League survival.

But he saw the post as a challenge and said his desire to achieve at St Andrew’s has not diminished, even after relegation to the Championship.

“I’d love to make a mark at St Andrew’s,” he said, in an exclusive interview on our website, www.birminghammail.net.

“That would be the dream for me. You would hope that I could do sufficiently enough to take us to the first step – the Premier League – and then from there.

“I still think that if we could go over that little barrier, then Birmingham could make an impression.”

The barrier? Negotiating the Championship and beyond.

McLeish said: “It’s small, but the difficult part is getting over it.

“I don’t think there’s a huge, huge gulf there. But it’s certainly a huge challenge.”

As for why he left his country for Blues, McLeish was forthright.
