Birmingham City's David Gold predicts Championship lead will change hands

two points a game,” Gold continued. “So we are one point ahead of schedule. If you had said at the start of the season that after Preston we would be on 46 points – exactly two points a game – I would have been thrilled.

“Yes, we’re all a bit down because we felt we should have got at least a draw from that game, but we’re still ahead of our dream.”

If matters do go right down to the wire as Gold suggested, the final day fixture could be interesting – Blues are away at Reading.

First, however, comes the crunch on Saturday at St Andrew’s that, apart from having a tag as the proverbial six-pointer, could prove immense in terms of psychological impact for the winner.

“You have to say you are looking at this game – just as it was when we went to Wolves – as test of our credentials,” said Gold.

“I think Reading are an extremely good team, it will be very difficult, no doubt about it.

“However, at Wolves were got a very laudable draw and I felt that overall we were the better team.

“We have every right to be confident in ourselves, at home in front of our own fans, and hopefully we may have one or two of our players back from injury as well who could perhaps make a bit of a difference.”

On that subject, Gold said that he sensed a good bond between the squad, which would stand Blues in good stead this weekend, and well into the coming months.

“Being among the players the other night [Sunday] at the club’s Christmas dinner, there was a definite camaraderie,” explained Gold.

“There were no big shots, nobody I would look at and think to myself ‘you know what, I don’t really like you that much’.

“In the past, from my experience of being in the dressing room before and after games, and being at the training ground, there have been individuals I haven’t felt comfortable about.

‘‘But with this group, not at all. There is a great tightness there, a great spirit.”
