Damien Johnson prepares for Birmingham City return

Damien Johnson

DAMIEN Johnson has taken his first steps towards putting himself up for first-team selection.

Johnson completed 90 minutes of a private reserve team friendly against Cheltenham Town at Wast Hills yesterday.

The midfielder had not seen any action since May, on the final day of last season, due to a nagging back complaint.

Surgery to a disc fixed the problem after Johnson broke down a day into Blues’ trip to Austria in July.

Johnson now has to keep clocking up the reserve team matches in order to get into optimum shape to help Blues Championship promotion push.

He volunteered to go on the bench at Plymouth Argyle a week ago due to an injury crisis but it was always unlikely that he would be used.

Striker James McPike also made his comeback yesterday in a 3-2 victory over a strong Cheltenham side.
