Garry O'Connor is frustrated with his Birmingham City absence

the Championship by hiring a personal trainer over the summer.

He was arguably Blues most impressive performer in pre-season and began to strike up a fruitful partnership with Kevin Phillips before the mishap at QPR on October 28.

O’Connor, who has scored five goals this campaign, added: “By mid-January I will be back running, the end of January kicking a ball again and then mid-February I will hopefully be available again.

“There’s a lot of hard to put be in between now and then to get myself back on the pitch and playing to the level I was before.

“Hopefully I’ll be back in action in no time at all and certainly involved in the business end of the season and the final push for promotion.”

Manager Alex McLeish said: “We have taken our time and consulted specialists on this matter as it was initially thought that rehab alone would cure the problem.

“However the injury has been niggling Garry and it was decided that he should have the operation.

“We will now put Garry through his rehabilitation and look forward to having him fit and available for selection again.”

O’Connor added: “There’s a great feeling around the club and such a good spirit in the camp that although it’s frustrating not to be playing I’ll be doing my cheerleading bit and supporting the lads all the way in the games I’m not involved in.”
