Alex McLeish is on a mission to change Birmingham City
ALEX McLeish has stressed that he is ‘on a mission’ to change Blues way of playing and thinking as the debate over the Swansea City performance rumbles on.
And he accepted that it was up to him to get it right, and no-one else.
McLeish explained his tactical thinking behind Sunday’s selection and denied it was too dour and handed Swansea the initiative.
“It ended up positively with all the results for us on Boxing Day and Sunday,” he said. “But listen, I wasn’t happy with what I was watching either. I empathise with the punters.
“And it’s up to me to put a bit of flair, to put a bit of energy and legs into the team.
“None of us [on the management/coaching staff] were happy that we didn’t pass the ball, we were reluctant to take the ball in certain areas.
“But, believe you me, we will be doing everything we can to improve that.
“We got a point out of a bad performance and looking at the other results, we gained on teams.
“But I’m not hiding behind anything. I want to see better than that and it is my mission to get it right.
“We are already bringing one or two players in, players I hope can help alter the style of the team. And we are looking at doing things in the transfer window.”
But how long will it ultimately take to elicit change and get Blues playing with a fluency and style?
McLeish doesn’t have financial resources to purchase the kind of players he would ideally like, so it’s a case of making do and mending at present.
“It’s a work in progress,” he said. “Unfortunately we haven’t brought in that much personnel to change things.
“We’ve dabbled with one or two positions, but there’s still areas we can definitely do better in.”
