Setback in Birmingham City's move for Rangers' Kris Boyd

the striker would prefer to stay with the Glasgow club and continue his tremendous goal-scoring record.

Boyd is not completely against a move to Blues but it appears that only highly-persuasive negotiations and an attractive financial package would sway things in McLeish’s favour.

However, there is also the danger that the recent breakdown in talks could alert other interested parties who will now know what fee is needed to prise Boyd away from Rangers.

Meanwhile, the Blues board will be keenly monitoring the reaction of their supporters to the news that Bowyer is set to arrive at St Andrew’s.

The Mail yesterday revealed he had been shown around Blues’ Wast Hills training ground.

The last time Bowyer was linked with Blues was in 2005 when furious supporters launched an internet campaign in a successful bid to halt the deal.

Now that plenty of water has passed under the bridge, Blues will be hoping to peacefully complete a deal for the 32-year-old ex-England international for a fee believed to be in the region of £1million.
