Birmingham City: We need another striker says Alex
Jan 10 2009 By Andy Walker
“You’ve got to remember that we’ve not scored enough goals,” said McLeish. “Now is that necessarily the strikers fault?
“Possibly not because they’ve not had as good a supply as I would expect.
“There is an argument for the strikers there but I need to put pressure on people. I need people to respond to that pressure when you are playing for a club with expectation. We have other strikers, we are waiting on Garry O’Connor, he’s still a wee bit away, but I would like to think we see somebody out there who can make a challenge to the guys up front because we’re not scoring enough goals. The strikers may say ‘we haven’t got the service’ so I’m trying to do both things. Phillips has got 11 goals and we haven’t got anybody really close to him after that but the challenge is ahead of the players.”
After David Murphy, a move for Boyd would have represented only McLeish’s second raid on the SPL.
He is continually linked with players from the Scottish top flight, Celtic’s Bobo Balde included, and admits he keeps on eye on developments north of the border.
The ex-Scotland manager believes the Championship is of a similar standard to the SPL.
“I never really took my eyes off Scottish football,” he said. The Championship is an extremely tough division, a lot of the teams would easily cope in the Premier League in Scotland,” he added.
