Birmingham City: Lee Bowyer promises he's a new man

“I wasn’t aware of that,” admitted Bowyer, who has signed a deal from the Hammers until the season’s end.

“It’s good to know. Everyone wants to feel wanted don’t they?”

Bowyer, whose partner is expecting twins in April, said he was a more mature, quieter person.

And he pointed out that he was cleared of charges of grievous bodily harm and affray after an alleged attack on an Asian student in Leeds, an episode that caused some Blues fans to doubt the wisdom of bringing him to the club.

“I’d like to think my life off the pitch has been quiet for a number of years now.

“I’m settled and I’m going to be a dad soon. But for a long time I’ve been settled off the pitch.

“People always talk about the past, but no one says I was not guilty, you know.

“No one mentions that. It’s always, ‘you had this trial’. I got found not guilty – no one adds that little bit at the end.

“And that was eight years ago. Obviously, I don’t want to talk about that because, in my eyes, I did nothing wrong.

“I’ve come here and I want to move forward but I’d like to think I’ve been settled for a long time.”
