Birmingham City fans have taken to Carlos Costly

CARLOS Costly’s enthusiasm and game attitude has won the Blues fans over, Alex McLeish believes.

Although he has yet to score since his loan move from Polish side Belchatow, Costly’s willing and rangy style – and his favourite step over/drag back trick – has turned him into something of a cult hero.

“I think the British crowd love someone who puts his heart and soul into it, and Carlos does that,” said McLeish.

"I will give you an example of a player I had at Rangers, Ronald de Boer, who was used to the culture of Spain, with Barcelona, and Holland, with Ajax.

"I showed him some of the things that would endear him to the fans and that was when you lose the ball, you make a reaction, you chase it.

"It helped if you didn't lose the ball in the first place! And, to be fair to Ronald, he wasn't a guy who lost the ball a lot, he was a superb technical player. But when he started to do what I suggested, the Rangers fans absolutely fell in love with him.
