Birmingham City: The youth team player with more than a hint of David Beckham about him

“I’ve have got so many videos of him that I look at, he’s unbelievable in every aspect,” said Sammons, who is from Dorridge.

“I study his passing, his technique, his crossing. When he whips the ball in, I love trying to do it in the same way.”

With Mehdi Nafti set to leave in the summer, the long-term future of Damien Johnson in doubt and Lee Bowyer on loan, there could be openings in midfield in the summer. Sammons is well aware of this, and has been working on his game and picking up tips since making his reserves debut as a schoolboy and joining on scholarship terms.

“One of my strengths, I think, is retaining the ball and picking a pass,” he said. “But I’ve been trying to learn when to make the right pass, when to play it easy, five yards instead of looking for the 50-yard killer ball.

“It’s all about trying to play and be like a professional.”
