Bring on Liverpool FC says Birmingham City Academy manager

It’s not only ability that counts for him, but attitude and a competitive nature.

“The staff have worked very hard, along with the players.

“We have spoken many times about trying to nail down a culture and what you are all about.

“I saw some of our young ones at the game, some of our 13-year-olds, and they have got to look at that, and when they go on the pitch they have got to work hard and do things properly and train properly every day.

“The end result is that over a period of time you will start producing footballers who will play in the first team and get a winning attitude, and that’s what we’re after.”

Luke Hubbins netted a dramatic 86th minute winner, as Blues stuck to their task.

“The nine for them [Marvin Sorvell] is a really dangerous player. I saw their previous game against Ipswich when he got a hat-trick and our two centre-backs, Dan Preston and Jacob Rowe, really took care of him.

“He was their real big threat and if we could keep him quiet, which we did the majority of the time, I felt we could force a goal.

“Dean Lyness made a great save [in the 19th minute] then we got on top of them and we had one or two great opportunities to be ahead.”

Westley added: “We really set out to push up against them and make it hard, where they’ve got their three in midfield. And we stopped them playing for most of the game.

“The key to it is when you’ve got the ball is to try to go cold on it and then get playing yourself, which is what the boys did."
